What is dark fantasy romance?

Dark fantasy romance is a love story set in a fantasy world where magic has a price, power is dangerous, and the romance has to survive both. The “dark” is a measure of consequence, not of how explicit the story is.

That consequence looks like bargains that bind, courts that devour their favourites, immortals who have forgotten how to be kind, and a heroine who walks into all of it anyway, usually because the alternative is worse.

What makes it dark

Three things, usually together. First, magic with a cost: in dark fantasy romance nobody waves a wand for free. A spell takes years, a bargain takes a name, a garden takes a promise. The romance inherits that economy, so love is never simply declared; it is paid for. Second, power that is genuinely frightening. The love interest is often an immortal, a king, a keeper, a creature bound to something older than itself, and the story does not pretend that power is harmless. The tension comes from watching someone dangerous choose gentleness, and from not being sure, for a long time, that they will. Third, a world that is indifferent to the lovers. Courts, curses and old rules do not care that two people have found each other. The happy ending, when it comes, is wrenched out of the world rather than granted by it.

What it is not is grimdark. Dark fantasy romance keeps the promise every romance makes: the ending is earned and it is happy, or at least whole. The darkness is the road, not the destination.

Dark fantasy romance, dark romance, gothic romance: the difference

The three get shelved together and they are not the same book. Dark romance is about intensity between two people: morally grey characters, power imbalances, transgression, and it can be set in a modern city as easily as a kingdom. Gothic romance is about atmosphere: a house with a past, isolation, dread and longing in the same sentence. Dark fantasy romance is about a world: the magic and the politics of an invented place are what make the love story dangerous. A vampire in Edinburgh is paranormal or gothic. A shadow king on an obsidian throne, taking a mortal bride as tribute, is dark fantasy.

Romantasy, the newer label, overlaps almost completely; the difference is emphasis. Romantasy promises romance first and a fantasy setting second, and tends to be lighter in tone. Dark fantasy romance keeps the fantasy stakes fully loaded and lets the tone go where the world takes it.

The tropes you will meet

• Enemies to lovers: the assassin sent to kill the queen, the mortal and the court that took her. In a fantasy world the enmity has armies behind it.
• The bargain: a deal struck with something old, whose terms turn out to be the plot. Watch what the characters promise; in this genre a promise is a plot device.
• Fated mates and bonds: a magical tether that decides the pairing before the people do, and the question of whether love chosen under compulsion counts.
• Forced proximity with a monster: a keeper who cannot leave his garden, a guardian bound to a wood, a librarian who is the library. Someone is trapped, and the other person keeps coming back.
• The court: fae courts, shadow courts, courts of day and night. Politics as romance obstacle, where a public gesture can be a death sentence.
• The mortal and the immortal: three hundred years on one side, one lifetime on the other, and the arithmetic of that.

Why readers cannot leave it alone

Because the stakes are literal. In a contemporary romance the worst outcome is heartbreak; in dark fantasy romance the worst outcome is a kingdom falling or a soul kept as a rose for three centuries, and the love story has to be strong enough to matter against that. The genre also gives the reader something the realist novel rarely can: a love interest who is honestly, structurally other. Not a difficult man, but a different kind of being, whose gentleness has to be learned and whose danger never entirely goes away. That is a very old pleasure (Beauty and the Beast is a dark fantasy romance) dressed in new worlds.

How explicit is it?
