What makes slow burn work
Three things, and most failed slow burns miss at least one.
The obstacle has to be real. If two people could simply talk and resolve it, the delay reads as contrivance. Distance, duty, an oath, a species barrier, four centuries of habit — the reason has to hold.
Something has to happen while you wait. Slow burn is not an absence of plot. The best examples fill the gap with work, danger or craft — letters, restoration, navigation — so the delay is textured rather than empty.
The release has to cost something. If nothing changes when they finally act, the wait was pointless. The payoff should be irreversible.
Slow burn vs. other pacing
