The last thing Mara expected at the jazz bar was the stranger whose touch burned cold — and whose bite promised an eternity she never asked for.

—

The jazz bar had no name.

That should have been Mara’s first warning. Every decent establishment in New Orleans had a name — something French and faded, painted on a weathered sign, evoking the kind of history that tourists paid good money to pretend they understood. But the bar on Rue Dumaine had only a door, black and unmarked, wedged between a voodoo shop and a shuttered bookstore. No sign. No bouncer. Just a faint pulse of music bleeding through the wood like a heartbeat through skin.

Mara pushed the door open because she was tired of being careful.

Six months since the divorce. Three months since she’d packed her life into two suitcases and traded Chicago’s gray skyline for the humid chaos of the French Quarter. She’d come to New Orleans to write — that was the story she told herself, and the story she told her sister on the phone every Sunday. In truth, she’d come here to feel something. Anything. The marriage had scooped her hollow, and she was desperate to be filled with something other than regret.

The bar was underground — a narrow staircase descended into a room of exposed brick and candlelight, where a quartet played something slow and aching in a corner wreathed in cigarette smoke. The air was thick with heat and bourbon and the sweet rot of magnolia that seemed to permeate every building in this city, as though the flowers had grown into the walls themselves.

Mara found a seat at the bar and ordered a Sazerac because that was what you did in New Orleans when you wanted to feel like you belonged. The bartender — a woman with silver-streaked locs and knowing eyes — made it without speaking, set it before her, and moved on.

She was halfway through the drink when the temperature dropped.

The Stranger Who Burned Cold — A Vampire Romance Begins

Not dramatically. Not the sudden chill of a horror movie. Just a subtle shift in the air around the empty stool to her left — as though someone had opened a window to a much colder night. Mara glanced over and found that the stool was no longer empty.

He was already looking at her.

The first thing she noticed was the stillness. He sat with an absolute economy of movement that made everyone else in the bar look fidgety by comparison — no tapping fingers, no shifting weight, no unconscious adjustments. He simply existed, perfectly composed, like a painting that had decided to step off the wall and order a drink.

The second thing she noticed was that he was devastatingly beautiful. Dark hair, nearly black, swept back from a face of sharp angles and elegant contradictions — a strong jaw softened by a full mouth, deep-set eyes that caught the candlelight and threw it back in shades of dark honey. His skin was pale in a way that should have looked sickly in the warm light but instead looked luminous, as though he were lit from within by something cooler and older than electricity.

He wore a charcoal suit that fit him like it had been sewn directly onto his body, with no tie and the collar open, revealing the hollow of a throat that Mara’s eyes lingered on for a beat longer than she intended.

“You’re staring,” he said. His voice was low and cultured, with an accent she couldn’t place — something European that had been worn smooth by time, like a stone in a river.

“You appeared out of nowhere,” Mara countered. “That tends to draw attention.”

His mouth curved. Not quite a smile — more like the memory of one, practiced and perfected over a very long time. “I’ve been sitting here for ten minutes. You were lost in your drink.”

That wasn’t true. Mara was certain of it. She’d glanced at that stool moments ago and it had been empty. But something about the way he held her gaze — steady, unblinking, with an intensity that felt almost physical — made her doubt her own certainty.

“I’m Mara,” she said, because the silence was becoming a third person between them and she wasn’t sure she liked who it was.

“Dominic.” He lifted his glass — something dark, neat, no ice — and inclined it toward her. “You’re not from New Orleans.”

“Chicago. Six months ago.”

“Running from something.”

“Starting something.” She took a sip of her Sazerac. “There’s a difference.”

The Walk Through the French Quarter

She should not have left the bar with him.

Mara knew this the way you know a stove is hot — the knowledge existed, was perfectly clear, and was thoroughly ignored in favor of curiosity. Dominic had paid for both their drinks with cash from a billfold that looked older than the bar itself, had offered his arm with a formality that belonged to another century, and had suggested a walk through the Quarter with a voice that made the word “walk” sound like an invitation to something far more dangerous.

They moved through streets glazed with recent rain, the cobblestones reflecting neon and gaslight in smeared streaks of color. The crowds thinned as they left Bourbon Street behind, drifting into the quieter blocks where the balconies sagged under the weight of iron and jasmine and the houses pressed close like gossips sharing secrets.

His hand, resting lightly at the small of her back, radiated a cold that seeped through her dress and settled against her spine like a whispered warning she chose not to hear.

“Your hands are freezing,” she said.

“Poor circulation.” The corner of his mouth twitched. “A chronic condition.”

He stopped at the mouth of an alley draped with wisteria so thick it formed a living tunnel, the purple flowers releasing their perfume into the warm night air. “Incurable.”

Mara looked up at him — at the way the moonlight gathered on his cheekbones, at the shadows pooling in the hollow of his throat, at those amber eyes that seemed to hold more years than his face could account for.

“What are you?” she asked.

Dominic regarded her for a long moment. Then he lifted his hand and traced the line of her jaw with one cold finger, from her ear to her chin, and the touch sent a shiver cascading through her that had nothing to do with the temperature.

“You already know,” he said softly. “You knew the moment I sat down. Your pulse has been elevated since I spoke your name, and not entirely from attraction — though that is there too, beating like a drum beneath your very lovely skin.” His thumb brushed the pulse point at her throat, and his eyes darkened. “I can hear it, Mara. I can hear every beat of your heart. And it is the most beautiful sound I have heard in a very long time.”

If you’ve read other dark fantasy romance stories on SensualRead, you know the moment when a mortal stands at the threshold of something ancient and impossible and chooses to step through. This was Mara’s threshold.

The Choice That Changed Everything

“Vampire.” The word should have sounded ridiculous. Instead it settled between them like a truth that had been waiting patiently for someone to speak it aloud.

“An imprecise word,” Dominic said. “But it will do.”

“You want to kill me.”

“I want to taste you.” His honesty was startling — no deflection, no seduction, just the raw fact of his desire laid out like a card on a table. “There is a considerable difference. I have not killed in a very long time. I find it crude.”

They stood in the wisteria alley, the purple blooms dripping moonlight, and Mara catalogued the signals her body was sending: heart hammering, skin flushed, pupils dilated, a heat building low in her belly that had absolutely no business existing in a conversation about predation. She was afraid. She was also more aroused than she had been in years, and the combination was intoxicating.

“What happens if you taste me?” she asked.

Something shifted behind his eyes — a flicker of hunger so intense it aged him, briefly, revealing the centuries behind the beautiful mask. “You would feel pleasure. I would feel sustenance. And we would both be changed.”

“Changed how?”

“You would carry a piece of me in your blood. Not enough to turn you — that requires far more than a taste. But enough that you would feel things more vividly. Colors brighter. Music deeper. Touch…” His gaze dropped to her lips. “More.”

“You’re afraid,” he observed.

“Terrified.”

“And yet you haven’t run.”

“I came to New Orleans to feel something,” she said. “I didn’t specify what.”

His laugh was soft and surprised and genuine — a sound she suspected he didn’t make often. It transformed his face from beautiful to breathtaking, and she realized with a lurch that she had already decided.

“Take me home,” she said.
