Niamh does not believe in the old gods, which is awkward, because one of them has been following her for weeks. Funny, sharp, and the most modern in voice.

5. The Bean Sí’s Lament

The keening begins at midnight, as it always does. A doctor who deals in evidence meets a tradition that does not care what he believes.

6. The Harper of the Hollow Hills

Music from underground on Midsummer’s Eve, and a woman who follows it. The fae-bargain story done with real restraint.

7. The Well Keeper’s Oath

The holy well of Tobernalt, kept by Gallagher women for longer than memory holds. Inheritance, duty, and what the water expects in return.

8. The Salmon of Knowledge

The Boyne in spate, and a visitor centre at Brú na Bóinne where the myth is meant to stay safely behind glass.

9. The Witch Who Loved the Storm

Weather as a lover, and a witch who knows better than to want one. Elemental, wild, and a fitting close to a list rooted in land and sea.

The myths behind the stories

You do not need to know the source material to enjoy these, but it deepens them. A few worth knowing:

• The selkie — a seal woman who becomes human when her skin is removed, and must stay while it is hidden. It is a story about consent and captivity that the tradition tells with unusual honesty.
• The Morrígan — goddess of war, fate and crows. She chooses champions; they rarely want the job.
• The Dagda — father-figure of the Tuatha Dé Danann, keeper of a cauldron that never empties.
• The bean sí — the keening woman whose cry announces a death in the family. Not a monster. A mourner.
• Samhain — the night the veil between worlds thins, and the origin of Hallowe’en.
• The salmon of knowledge — eat it and all wisdom is yours, which as usual turns out to be a mixed blessing.

Why Celtic mythology suits romance

Because the otherworld in Irish myth negotiates. It does not simply take. Nearly every encounter is a bargain — a year and a day, a skin returned, an oath kept at a well — and a bargain is a relationship with terms. That is already the shape of a love story, which is why these tales adapt so naturally.

There is also the setting. Modern Ireland with the old world visible underneath it — a bog find, a visitor centre, a well still tended — gives these stories a grounded quality that pure fantasy struggles to match.
