What is forbidden romance?

Forbidden romance is a love story in which the love itself is the transgression. The attraction is there from the first page; what the characters cannot do is act on it, because a family, a faith, a profession, a species, a war or their own conscience says no.

That prohibition is the engine. Every stolen moment becomes an act of courage, every interaction is charged because both people know the cost, and the decision to cross the line is the most dramatic thing either of them will ever do.

Why we want what we cannot have

It is not a flaw in human psychology; it is a feature. Desire intensifies under denial, and a romance that acknowledges the wanting while forbidding the having turns every scene into a pressure gauge. The reader is doing two things at once: hoping the lovers will give in and dreading what it will cost them. The best forbidden romances are honest about that cost. They make the prohibition real, not a misunderstanding to be cleared up in chapter twenty, so that when the characters finally choose each other they are choosing with full knowledge of what they are giving up. That is why the ending of a forbidden romance feels earned in a way few other happy endings do: the love has been tested against something that genuinely mattered.

The forms the prohibition takes

• Loyalty: loving someone your side calls the enemy. A wounded Jacobite at an English gate; an assassin and his target.
• Nature: love between different kinds of being, or different states of being. A reaper and a dying man. A banshee and the mortal who hears her. A selkie and the woman holding her skin.
• Duty: a vow, an office, a keeping that leaves no room for a private life. The keeper of a holy well; the guardian of a court.
• Profession: the surgeon and the patient, the governess and the household, the boundary that ethics drew for good reasons.
• Society: class, caste, faith, the family feud, the betrothal already arranged.
• The self: the character’s own code, which is the hardest wall of all because nobody else can knock it down.

Forbidden love and its neighbours

Forbidden love is often confused with forced proximity, and they are near opposites: forced proximity pushes the characters together and lets closeness do the work; forbidden love holds them apart and lets distance do it. Put both in one story, two people who cannot avoid each other and must not touch, and you have a pressure cooker, which is why so many of the stories below use both. It is also distinct from enemies to lovers: enemies can be openly at war and still allowed to fall in love; forbidden lovers may like each other from the first page and be forbidden anyway. And it is the beating heart of dark romance, where the transgression is the point rather than the obstacle.

How explicit is it?

Forbidden romance runs on restraint by definition; the charge is in what cannot happen. Some of the stories below stay sensual and atmospheric throughout, others cross the line in every sense.
