New to Romance? A Beginner’s Guide to Every Subgenre (With Free Stories)

If you are new to romance — or returning after years away and finding the shelves unrecognisable — the vocabulary is the first barrier. Romantasy. Morally grey. Slow burn. Heat level four. This guide explains the main subgenres, tells you which to try based on what you already like, and points you at a free story in each so you can test before committing.

Everything linked here is free to read in full on SensualRead. No account, no paywall.

The main subgenres, explained

Dark romance

Morally grey characters, power imbalances, and consequences that stick. Not cruelty for its own sake — the darkness is pressure that makes the tenderness land harder. Start with: The Shadow King’s Bride. Go deeper: the dark romance reading list.

Gothic romance

Mood before plot. Isolated houses, weather doing emotional work, attraction that feels faintly like a warning. Lower heat, higher atmosphere. Start with: The Keeper of Ashworth Abbey. Go deeper: the gothic list.

Paranormal & vampire romance

Immortality as the obstacle. Someone has centuries of practice at wanting; someone else has a lifespan. Start with: Bitten at Midnight. Go deeper: the vampire list.

Historical romance

The past supplies the obstacles — rank, reputation, war, distance. Ranges from Regency ballrooms to ancient Egypt. Start with: The Courtesan’s Secret. Go deeper: the historical list.

Sci-fi romance

The only subgenre that can invent its own obstacles — species barriers, shared minds, four centuries of travel. Start with: Quantum Entangled. Go deeper: the sci-fi list.

Mythic & Celtic romance

Bargains with the otherworld, set in modern Ireland with the old world pressing through. Start with: The Selkie’s Bargain. Go deeper: the Celtic list.

Which should you try first?

The vocabulary you will meet

  • Slow burn — delay as structure. Feelings build across the whole book.
  • Enemies to lovers — antagonism that becomes something else.
  • Morally grey — a character whose methods you object to and whose reasons you understand.
  • Forced proximity — two people who cannot simply leave.
  • Romantasy — romance and fantasy given equal weight, currently the biggest growth area in publishing.
  • HEA / HFN — happily ever after, or happy for now. Romance convention guarantees one or the other.
  • Heat level — how explicit a story is. On this site, a rating means explicit content; no rating usually means sensual rather than graphic.

How heat ratings work here

Our most explicit stories carry a heat rating so you know before you start. 🔥 is tension with little on the page; 🔥🔥🔥 is steamy with explicit scenes; 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 is fully explicit. Stories without a rating tend toward atmosphere and sensuality rather than graphic content — useful if that is what you are after.
